in the last year of my undergraduate degree, i made multiple pieces of ceramic furniture. clay was the medium i chose due to its malleability during the creation process and its strength after firing. i started to noticed my sculptures tend to resemble mushrooms or the roots of a tree. at the time, i knew i chose functional sculpture because i didn’t want my work to sit on a shelf, i wanted it to have use in my life. later, only after thinking about my relationship with the things i consume, i realized the project’s intense connection to the environment. clay’s connection to earth deems it as a sustainable building material and when looking for function the pieces turn into environmental art.
